About the Design Museum

The Design Museum is in the upscale neighborhood of Kensington, not far from the center of London. Opened in 1989, the museum was originally in a former banana warehouse close to the river Thames but moved to its current location in 2011. This put it close to the other museums of Kensington's cultural quarter.

As you'd expect, the museum is dedicated to design, whether industrial, graphic, fashion, product, or architectural. The museum's top floor is occupied by the Designer Maker User exhibit, which uses objects to guide visitors through a history of contemporary design. The museum has also garnered praise for its Design Ventura project, which challenges schoolkids to design a new product to be sold in the museum store.

As well as the exhibits, the museum houses an important reference library for students and educators. It also has a 200-seat auditorium that holds talks and seminars on topics related to design.

The Design Museum is an attraction in its own right, but it benefits from being close to many other attractions in the Kensington area and throughout greater London. It makes a great place to visit as part of a larger London trip.

• High Street Kensington station is the nearest underground station to the museum and is approximately a 10-minute walk away.
• The area is also served by Holland Park, Kensington Olympia, and Earls Court Underground stations, which are all around 15 minutes from the museum on foot.
• Bus routes 9, 10, 27, 28, and 49 all stop close to the Design Museum.
