Where to go shopping in Copenhagen

People walking at night in an outdoor shopping mall in Copenhagen

For its gastronomy and design aesthetics, the Danish capital could rightly be considered the hottest travel destination in Europe. That may feel like a deterrent for discerning travelers looking for a sense of discovery, but the understated brilliance and satisfaction of a visit to Copenhagen is hard to argue with. Its restaurants, breweries, cafes, and lifestyle have been celebrated by most who pass through the Scandinavian city. The shopping? Not too shabby, either.

Copenhagen’s city center places more emphasis on smaller shops and boutique shops than major shopping centers. There are, of course, malls and department stores in and around Copenhagen, but the best experiences are had when exploring the neighborhoods or bustling city center. The best shopping streets tend to be situated in the inner city, but you can find pockets of culture and retail in the outer districts like Amagerbro, Vesterbro, Norrebro, and Frederiksberg (some locals might argue that’s where the real action is).

In terms of fashion, Danish brands to keep an eye out for are GANNI, Mads Nørgaard, Baum und Pferdgarten, Han Kjøbenhavn, Stine Goya, MUNTHE, ARKK, and plenty of smaller designers setting up shop in Copenhagen.

And keep an eye out, too, for Bounce luggage storage locations while shopping in Copenhagen. Leave your new purchases behind so you can explore the city more easily with our affordable storage options.

All you need to know when shopping in Copenhagen

As far as what it’s like to shop in Copenhagen, expect similar experiences to cities like Berlin or Amsterdam. Shops are open into the early evening, but never late at night (the Danes have a healthy work-life balance). Credit cards are taken everywhere, and you might want to be aware that cashless businesses aren’t uncommon. English is widely spoken, but learning a few words in Danish here never hurt anyone, and it’s considered polite.

The best in Copenhagen sustainable shopping can be found, well, simply everywhere. Eco-friendly business practices are no gesture in Denmark, it’s a driving principle that’s intrinsic to even the most pragmatic businessperson in this country. So while Copenhagen’s green lifestyle (spoiler: you’ll be biking or using public transit a lot) might factor into your interest, it’s ubiquitous and expected when it comes to products.

Coolest shops in Copenhagen

Independently owned Danish fashion shops, vintage stores, and unique boutiques are the preferred way of shopping for Copenhagen locals. They’re simply everywhere in Copenhagen, and although H&M and similar institutions have a presence in the city, you should plan for exploration when shopping in this town.

Rotate

This designer brand had a buzz for years before opening its first retail space in the heart of Copenhagen (a quick walk from Kongens Nytorv, no less). If you’re looking for that Scandinavian-chic look, you’ve come to the right place. Simple and elegant, but not without flash. This Danish style will apply to anything you buy here, whether it’s a cocktail dress or a pair of sweatpants.

Heartmade

Understated, but elegant. That’s probably how you’d describe Danish aesthetics in general. All of these descriptors apply to the modernist threads that aren’t out of place in a business meeting. That’s what you should expect from this sleek boutique specializing in women’s wear on the bustling Pilestræde in central Copenhagen.

Henrik Vibskov

The traditionally Danish minimalist ideal has been thrown out the window by this (slightly) abrasive designer’s blown-out aesthetics. Head here for statement pieces for clubbing or concerts, rather than an interview or meeting your new fling’s parents.

Christiania/Freetown

One of the most famous aspects of Copenhagen is its hippie commune turned tourist attraction called Christiania. The origin story is too long to pore over, but it’s fascinating and well worth exploring if you’re heading to the Danish capital sans kids. If you’re looking for a truly unorthodox shopping experience, some of the settlements in the district will have unofficial craft stores and artists selling their wares, among other things. It’s important to note that caution should be taken before purchasing anything. Window shopping might be your best plan of attack.

  • Pro tip: Christiania is not a place you’ll want to be lugging your bags around. Not that you’re in any danger, but the infrastructure isn’t great in the district and you’re better off leaving valuables with a Bounce location where they’ll be protected by Bounce.

Shopping in Copenhagen beyond clothing

It’s not all about chic getups and eco-conscious sneakers. You’re in an interior design and gastronomy powerhouse, so you should absolutely explore the many food markets and specialty stores throughout Copenhagen.

Mikkeller & Friends Bottle Shop

Denmark’s (and Europe’s) most beloved craft brewery operates hipster-chic bars and restaurants all over Copenhagen. But if you’re on the go or want to bring some beer back home, there’s a lovely (and Instagram-friendly) store right outside of Nørreport Station at the popular Torvehallerne. These inventive brews are packaged with typically minimalist and fun artwork, making a bottle or cans the perfect thing to bring to a party or picnic.

Tekla

The cozy Danish self-care concept of hygge has been all the rage these past few years, and there’s no better way to set yourself up for success than to invest in proper fabrics. Tekla’s expertly made interiors and sheets are not only attractive, but the coziness they provide will have you in hibernation mode as soon as you get back home. Their flagship store near Rosenborg Castle is easy to reach and easier to leave with a new set of bed sheets.

  • Pro tip: If your haul is bulky or unwieldy, you can leave it at a Bounce storage spot that doesn’t have the same size limits that a train station locker would have.
  • Address: Vognmagergade 7

Torvehallerne

The TorvehallerneKBH Market Hall is one of the top food markets in a city where you can’t walk (or bike, it’s Copenhagen) for 10 minutes without running into some sort of market. Torvehallerne brings a springy vibe any time of year as the fresh produce provides lovely aromas in a humid space with ample natural light. You’ll have your pick of food stalls and vendors (don’t skip the Danish hotdogs) along with more involved options like Spanish tapas or crepes. There’s an area of the market where you’ll be able to shop through well-made cookware and baking gear, as well. Ask any local, and they’ll vouch for the quality here.

  • Pro tip: The market couldn’t be easier to reach, as Norreport Station is less than a five-minute walk away. If you’re heading to the market as your first stop, using a nearby Bounce storage spot is a great way to set yourself up for your first impressions of Copenhagen.

Traditional shopping options in Copenhagen

The city has just about everything a shopper could ask for when it comes to shopping. And not just boutiques and vintage shops. There are a number of malls and retail districts that are easily accessible from the city center, providing ample options regardless of taste.

Strøget

The city’s go-to shopping district might seem like an obvious choice, but sometimes things are popular for a reason. Across its mile-long stretch of pedestrianized street running from City Hall Square (Rådhuspladsen) to Kongens Nytorv, Strøget boasts the full breadth of international fashion brands. From affordable options (H&M and Zara)  to luxury designer brands (Louis Vuitton, Prada, and Max Mara) you’ll have just about anything you’d want or need at your fingertips. If you’re there during the holidays, expect the palace to be decked out in lights and wreaths.

  • Address: Frederiksberggade

Field’s

There are almost 150 stores at the country’s largest (and by far most popular) shopping mall. You’ll have your pick from familiar institutions like H&M and Zara, but if you dig a little deeper, Field’s is a solid place to uncover Danish brands. It’s a quick cab ride from Copenhagen Airport, so it makes for a nice escape if you don’t have enough time to get to the city.

  • Pro tip: Layovers can be stressful, but Bounce’s reliable locations and useful features like the mobile app take a ton of the guesswork out of storing your bags!
  • Address: Arne Jacobsens Allé 12

Fisketorvet

Not a single in-the-know traveler envisions themself in the design capital of Europe shopping through a mall. But if you need something and need it quickly, this massive mall is bound to have it. Situated along the waterfront near Havneholmen Metro Station, it’s one of the largest shopping malls in Denmark and boasts about 100 ships and a few dozen restaurants. There are better (and more historic) movie theaters in Copenhagen, but if you get caught in the rain, there’s a 10-screen cinema onsite.

  • Pro tip: If you’re taking the metro out to the Enghave Brygge district, you can leave your luggage back in central Copenhagen near any number of metro stops.
