December to April is the major tourist season in this area, with March being the absolute busiest time, so if you don't like crowds, it's better to plan to visit some other time of year. The rainy season lasts from May to September, so your best bet for enjoying these magnificent ruins is to visit between October to early December. The weather is delightfully warm, but the crowds are less than they are at other times of the year.

Bring water. The ancient city of Tulum is absolutely drenched in sun all year round, and exploring the magnificent temples and other buildings will soon cause you to work up a thirst. There are vendors on site who will sell you water, but it's always better to be as independent as possible and bring your own. You can stop at a grocery store in downtown Tulum on your way to the ruins to store luggage in a local luggage storage and pick up some water while you're at it.
