In the heart of the city, Tempe’s Mill Avenue District is a major shopping, dining, and entertainment hub in Arizona. In fact, this section of the downtown district has the highest concentration of shops, bars, microbreweries, cafés, and restaurants. The nightlife here is legendary, and you can find thousands of locals hitting the clubs and bars after the hot Arizona sun goes down. But don’t worry. It’s a big place with plenty of room for everyone.

From Tempe Town Lake in the north to Kiwanis Park in the south, there are so many things to do, you may find planning tough. If you are looking for culture, visit the Gammage Auditorium on South Forest Avenue, where they have live performances year-round like Hamilton, Cats, and The Nutcracker. Visit the ASU Art Museum on East 10th Street, see a show at the Marquee on North Mill Avenue, or watch a movie at AMC Centerpoint on South Mill Avenue. Or stop in at Harkins Valley Art Theater a little further up the road for a drink and a game of pool with your movie.

The one-third-mile Plants and People of the Sonoran Desert Loop has exhibits to show how Tohono O’odham, Western Apache, and Hispanic natives used the plants for building materials, food, and medicine. The Desert Living Trail is a short trek through a desert herb garden. The one-third-mile Desert Wildflower Loop has butterfly, hummingbird, and bee gardens. And the one-third-mile Desert Discovery Loop in the middle of the park is full of cacti and other succulents as well as the Stardust Foundation Plaza, Boppart Courtyard, and several learning buildings. Also 15 minutes away, the Museum of Natural History on North Macdonald has six major collections as well as some fascinating public art sculptures inside and out. The 80,000 square-foot museum has 60,000 artifacts and 10,000 photos. The Cenozoic Lobby has skeletons of a Glyptotherium, one-toed horse, mastodon, mammoth, and much more to see. The Natural History collection is one of the most popular with the dinosaur hall, dinosaur mountain, and the Paleo Dig Pit, where you can dig for fossils. The Southwest Cultures section has artifacts and info on the native people who lived in the area like the Hohokam, Paleoindians, and other desert cultures. The Mesoamerica and South America collection offers info and artifacts on the ancient cultures of Mexico, Central America, Maya, and Peru. Only 23 minutes away from the Mill Avenue District on South Central Avenue, you can explore nature in this 16,000-acre park. South Mountain Park and Preserve has 50 miles of trails and several mountain ranges to discover. Take the trail up to Dobbins Lookout 2,330 feet up for some amazing photos. Don’t miss the Hohokam Rock Art petroglyphs dating back to 450 AD. They are found along the Holbert Trail, Mormon Trail, Desert Classic, Mormon Loop, Kiwanis Trail, Telegraph Pass, and the Judith Tunnel. Also, be sure to visit the Mystery Castle, built in the 1930s out of materials like telephone poles, train ties, and automobile parts. The inside is still furnished, and they offer tours of the 18 rooms. You’ll find it on East Mineral Road at the foothills of the mountains in the park.
