Philadelphia’s Cheltenham Township is a perfect example of what we’re talking about; this locale shares a name with the English spa town of Cheltenham. Records show that Philadelphia’s Cheltenham Township was founded in 1682 by a small group of Quakers. Tobias Leech and Richard Wall were among their ranks. These two convinced their fellow Quakers to purchase a grand total of 4070 acres from one William Penn. Over time, these 4070 acres were gradually molded into what we now know as Cheltenham Township. 

While its English counterpart is a famous spa town, Philadelphia’s Cheltenham is a major historic hub in the US. The township is filled with numerous museums, monuments, and memorials that date back to the 17th Century and beyond. Cheltenham Township is also a popular filming location for various American shows and movies. It’s not uncommon to find film crews hard at work on any given day. Quite a few famous and influential people hail from Cheltenham: Cyrus H. K. Curtis, Kate Vrijmoet, Lil Dicky, Lucretia Mott, Michael Becker, and Reggie Jackson, to name a few. Luggage Storage Near Beth Sholom Congregation

The words Beth Sholom are Hebrew for “House of Peace.” This aptly named synagogue is located in the Elkins Park suburb and welcomes persons of all walks of life into its doors. American Architect Frank Lloyd Wright designed this building many decades ago. Since its completion in 1959, the Beth Sholom Congregation has remained a staple of Cheltenham Township’s culture. Luggage Storage Near Grey Towers Castle

The Grey Towers Castle is emblematic of Cheltenham Township. It’s one of the first buildings that’ll pop up when searching for images, and it’s also a part of Arcadia University’s campus. Architect Horace Trumbauer first designed this building in 1892, when he was only 23 years old. Since then, the caste has been expanded and improved numerous times. As with most ancient buildings, innumerable legends have cropped up around the castle. Some say that the building is haunted, while others claim that a great treasure lies within its walls. Either way, guests are highly encouraged to visit this Cheltenham Township landmark in person.

Earlier, we said that the Richard Wall House was the 2nd oldest building in Pennsylvania. That fact is certainly true. What’s also true is that this building is the oldest home in the entire state. Cheltenham Township founder Richard Wall lived in this house from 1682 until he passed away decades later. Wall’s descendants lived in the house until 1847. In 1980, the Cheltenham Township Historical Commission gained possession of the house and transformed it into a museum. The rest, as they say, is history.
