About Newcastle Central Station

Referred to locally simply as Central Station, this Newcastle upon Tyne station was opened by Queen Victoria in 1850; an occasion deemed so significant that city elders decided to make it a public holiday.

Today the station serves as a major stop between London in the south, and Scotland to the north. High-speed trains connect with London every half hour making this a very good base from which to access Newcastle upon Tyne and the surrounding points of interest.

Things to do near Newcastle Central Station

This friendly university town was once a center for the shipbuilding industry. Following the collapse of that industry, the town has done a brilliant job of reinventing itself as a science, arts, and cultural center with a vibrant downtown that is easy to access from the station.

  • Head underground on a tour of the Victoria wagonway. Between 1842 and 1860, this tunnel was used to carry coal from Town Moor to the Tyne River. It saw service again when it was used as a bomb shelter during the air raids of World War II. The two-to-three-hour tour offers a fascinating insight into both its history and construction and the dramas that took place there.
  • Get a taste of local art at The Biscuit Factory art gallery. Housed in a refurbished Victorian biscuit factory, this little gallery aims to showcase local artists and help put them on the map. There is also a bookshop and café.
  • Don’t forget the Mouse House. The Great North Museum is a slightly eclectic museum that offers something of interest for all members of the family. The Mouse House caters to the under-fives, but you can also explore the fossil room, living planet exhibitions and take an in-depth look into Hadrian's Wall, plus much more.
  • Dive into the local culture at Grainger Market. This covered market has food stalls selling a wide range of international and local dishes, as well as shops, boutiques and a fresh food market. Always a great way to get a feel for local life.
  •  Learn a little with a visit to Newcastle Castle. This was no rich land baron’s home but was instead, a formidable fort from which to keep an eye on the local population. Built in 1172, the fort offers imposing views of the city and is today an interactive education center that will shed light on much of the region's long and sometimes dark history.

Transit options at Newcastle Central Station

Set 300 kilometers from London, the station obviously offers an ideal mid-way point between England and Scotland at which to split a journey and explore some of the north of England.

  • Train links couldn’t be easier whether you are heading north or south or simply wanting to spend time in the region itself.
  • The Tyne and Wear Metro is situated directly underneath the station and that makes local travel in the city a cinch.
  • As if that is not convenient enough, the city buses are both cheap and frequent.
