About National Gallery of Victoria

The National Gallery of Victoria, also commonly referred to simply as NGV, is the biggest, oldest, and most visited art museum in the Australian city of Melbourne. The NGV houses an impressive collection across two gallery locations – first is the NGV International, which is found on St. Kilda Road in Southbank’s Melbourne Art Precinct, and the other one is the Ian Potter Centre, situated at Federation Square.

Designed by Sir Roy Grounds, the NGV International facility opened in 1968 and is home to its international art collection. The building is also listed on the Victorian Heritage Register. Meanwhile, the newer Ian Potter Centre, designed by Lab Architecture Studio, was established in 2002. It houses the Australian collection of the facility, including works from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island communities. These two galleries are a short walk away from each other, and guests can easily access both buildings.

The NGV’s impressive collection represents the world’s most significant art movements across various cultures. Aside from its permanent collections, The NGV also hosts temporary exhibitions, kids’ programs, films, talks, and other performances. The gallery is one of Melbourne’s top tourist destinations and one that you shouldn’t miss when in the city.

Fun fact: In 1986, Pablo Picasso’s The Weeping Woman was stolen from NGV by a group called “Australian Cultural Terrorists” as a sign of protest against the government’s alleged poor treatment of the arts. Two weeks later, the painting was recovered in its original state from a railway locker.
