About Liverpool Central Station

Liverpool Central is a subterranean transport hub in the city of Liverpool in northwest England. The underground station is operated by Merseyrail and first opened for service in 1892. Originally dark, dismal and only accessible by stairs, Liverpool Central has undergone a series of renovations over the years to bring it up to date and to be capable of coping with the ever-increasing numbers of commuters using the station. The bright, modern station has three different levels with various platforms and caters on average to over sixteen million passengers every year. Access to the platforms for the Northern and Wirral Lines is now by elevator or escalator.

The main entrance to Liverpool Central is on Ranelagh Street and fronted by a shopping center through which there is direct access to the station hall and ticket offices. All other facilities at Liverpool Central are located on the ground floor. These include cash machines, automatic ticket machines, vending machines for cold drinks and snacks, and public bathrooms with a baby changing room. The arrival and departure of the different train services are displayed on digital screens throughout the concourse and are similar to what you'd see in an airport.

While the first thing that comes to mind when the name Liverpool is mentioned might be football, there's a lot more to this city than a famous soccer team. Liverpool has been a major port on the west coast of Great Britain since the early 1800s, has a historic center that's a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and has produced more famous musicians and writers than just about any other city in the country.

  • Get cultural by browsing the art exhibits at the Tate Liverpool. The extensive collections at the Tate contain works dating through the ages and from as far back as the 16th century, as well as paintings by modern artists like David Hockney and Paula Rego.
  • Take a stroll around the Royal Albert Dock, one of Liverpool's historic areas, then take a table at one of the restaurants there for lunch by the waterside.
  • Take a selfie in front of the Beatles statues at the Beatles Pier Head on the side of the Mersey River.
  • Learn about the horrors of the transatlantic slave trade and the part Britain played in it by visiting the International Slavery Museum.
  • Have a night out at the Cavern Club the venue where the Beatles played their first live gigs before becoming world-famous.
  • If the weather is bad, or even if it's not, go for a game of mini-golf on the indoor and very luminescent course at Ghetto Golf.
  • Go below street level and into the spooky Williamson Tunnels, a network of brick-lined tunnels and crypts dating from the early 19th century that are reputed to be haunted by the tobacco merchant who built them.

Attractions and activities near Liverpool Central Station

Speke: Speke is a town south of Liverpool and a place you should visit if you want to see how the British other half lived. On the outskirts of the town is a country estate managed by the National Trust that contains a magnificent piece of Tudor architecture. Speke Hall has a four-hundred-year history, priests hiding holes in its walls, and is part legacy of the wealth created for some from the slave-trading of the era.

Thurstaston: Cross over the Mersey River, head to the village of Thurstaston and you'll discover one of the best beaches in north-west England. Thurstaston sits on a strip of land known as the Wirral Peninsula and is a quaint place with an old church, traditional tea rooms, and Thurstaston Beach. The broad stretch of sand and shingle is part of the Dee River estuary and a conservation area. Sheltered from the elements by steep cliffs, it's a great spot to have a picnic, a walk by the riverside, or just chill out on the sand.

Warrington: Warrington is a town east of Liverpool which is well worth a visit. You don't need to have sailing experience to jump aboard a canal boat there and navigate the Bridgewater Canal. It's a tranquil way of seeing the area, but if you're not keen on boats then there are plenty of walking and cycling paths that follow the same route. In Warrington, you can browse around the Museum and Art Gallery, and then take a look at the stained glass windows in Daresbury Church which commemorate the stories of Lewis Carroll. Outside the town is the Gulliver's World Theme Park which is great for adults as well as kids or for something a little less exciting, pop over to the Walton Hall and Gardens where there's a mini zoo.
