About Bergamo airport

Situated outside of Milan in northern Italy’s Lombardy region, Bergamo is one of the most underrated travel destinations in Italy. Sure, it’s Italy, so it might be hard to stand out when compared to cities like Venice or Rome. But Bergamo boasts one of the more unique settings and an impressively preserved historic town center that demands attention that most destinations of its size can’t.

The city’s topography is its most notable feature, and it’s divided into two distinct areas, the upper town (Città Alta) and the lower town (Città Bassa). The elevated and historic Città Alta has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the almost untouched medieval architecture is as picturesque as it gets. The lovely Piazza Vecchia and the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore are some of Northern Italy’s most famous landmarks, but you can get the full experience by simply getting lost in the upper town’s maze of cobbled streets.

Many international travelers will arrive in Bergamo via train or car from Milan, as the Milan Malpensa Airport has a high number of international connections. But a few lucky travelers can fly into Bergamo Airport from around Europe. Orio al Serio International Airport, also known as Milan Bergamo Airport, is situated just outside the city center and is easily reached from most parts of Bergamo. It’s a surprisingly busy airport, as it’s a major hub for low-cost airlines. Many European travelers actually use Bergamo Airport as a way to get to Milan.

Here’s everything you need to know:

Can I leave my luggage at Milan Bergamo Airport?

There are luggage storage facilities at Bergamo Airport that can be rented for about $4 per item per day. There is a 55-pound weight limit for each item that will double the cost of the fee. This option can be useful, especially with Bergamo Airport’s relative proximity to the city center. But very few travelers use Bergamo Airport as a connection, so layovers are extremely rare. If you need to store the bags while you sightsee on a travel day, it’s more useful to find a place within Bergamo city center.

Are there storage lockers at Milan Malpensa Airport?

While Bergamo Airport is a perfectly serviceable air travel hub, the largest international airport in the region is Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP). The vast majority of Americans and international travelers will arrive in Bergamo by flying into Milan. There is a luggage storage area situated on the ground level of Terminal 1 Arrivals Area B. It costs about $4 per day for standard luggage sizes, with extra fees for larger items and extended storage periods.

Can you store luggage at Bergamo Train Station?

Italian train stations don’t always have left luggage facilities, but Bergamo Train Station has surprisingly robust amenities. If you need to store your personal belongings near Bergamo Station, you can use the station’s luggage lockers. These are fairly small, and won't be able to accommodate most oversized luggage, so it’s best to have a backup plan.

What’s the most convenient luggage storage in Bergamo?

The Bounce luggage storage service is by far the best option in Bergamo for stashing the bags for a few hours. Bounce partners with local shops in cities like Bergamo to provide its customers with the most convenient locations, and vets each location to ensure security and quality of service. With Bounce’s mobile app, you can search for the most convenient location and even book luggage storage online ahead of time or on the go.

How to get to the city from Bergamo Airport

  • Bus: The ATB runs an aptly named "Airport Bus," service between the airport and Bergamo city center. It takes between 15 and 20 minutes and you can board the bus outside the arrivals area. There are ticket machines outside of the bus stop, but you can always buy one from the driver if you have cash. It costs about $5.
  • Taxi and rideshare: This is the most common way to get to hotels in the city center, taking only 15 minutes to get from the taxi stand at the arrivals area to central Bergamo. Some travelers will hail cabs or Ubers to go even as far as Milan (though that’s an expensive journey). A typical ride to Bergamo costs $40 because of fees.
  • Renting a car: whether or not you should rent a car depends entirely on your itinerary. If you’re looking to drive around Lombardy or go on a road trip to the Alps, it might make sense. But if you’re sticking around Bergamo or just trying to get to Milan, the up to $150 rental (per day) might not make sense. Parking in Milan is a hassle, and you can get there for way less money in about the same amount of time as driving.

How to get from Bergamo Airport to Milan

Plenty of fashion-hungry travelers from around Europe use Bergamo Airport as a means to get to Milan. The two cities are fairly close, so it’s easy to fly into Bergamo Airport and get to Milan within a few hours. One of the most common ways to get there is the Terravision and Autostradale bus companies, which operate direct bus services between Bergamo Airport and Milan Central Station (Stazione Centrale). It costs less than $20 for a one-way ticket, and it takes about an hour. You can also take the bus to Bergamo Train Station (Stazione di Bergamo) and then take a train to Milan from there. This takes up to 90 minutes, but it’s popular because you can explore Bergamo’s city center for a bit before your connection.

Things to do near Bergamo Airport

Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore

It wouldn't be a charming Italian city without a beautiful basilica. Fittingly, the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore is Città Alta’s crown jewel and most important landmark. Built on the land where the Romans once placed a cherished temple, this 12th-century basilica reflects the religious and political evolution of Italy as Bergamo became part of the most prominently Catholic country in the world. Its Romanesque architecture can be admired from street level, toured, or simply experienced through Sunday mass.

Take the funicular up to the Città Alta for the best vibes and views

If you want to take a grueling 20-minute hike up the hill to Città Alta, you'll certainly break a sweat. But if it’s warm out and you want a more comfortable sightseeing experience, you can take the funicular up to the higher levels of the city.

Getting off the cable car, you’ll stumble onto Piazza Vecchia, which is the heart of Città Alta. This central square is surrounded by wonderful 12th-century buildings like the Palazzo della Ragione along with plenty of restaurants and gelaterias. It’s a fabulous place to grab an espresso and people-watch before heading out to sightsee through Bergamo’s upper district.

Check out the the Rocca di Bergamo

Most of the top attractions and landmarks are situated within Città Alta, but the one actually at the top would be the 14th-century fortress Rocca di Bergamo. It’s situated at the highest point in the city, with unreal views of the lower city that really demonstrate the dramatic topography that makes up the land Bergamo is situated on. You can also take a break from sightseeing next to the tower at the leafy Remembrance Park.

Walk along the city’s Venetian Walls

One of the city’s top UNESCO World Heritage Sites, these formidable walls were built by the occupying Republic of Venice to protect Città Alta from its rival factions in Milan as well as France.  While these political squabbles and wars are long gone, these 16th-century fortifications remain, and they still ring the most historic part of Bergamo. In fact, you can distinctly feel the change in atmosphere upon entering the walls, as they essentially demarcate the modern and historic districts of Bergamo.

Retail therapy at Via XX Settembre

In case you can't make it to Milan, you can still embrace your inner fashionista by window shopping through Bergamo’s most glamorous street. One of the highlights of the Città Bassa in the lower district, Via XX Settembre is lined with luxury boutiques selling everything from designer clothes to vintage threads.
