Things to do at night in Lyon to experience the city like a local

The historic buildings of Lyon lit up at night

While it’s overshadowed by Paris, Lyon offers an intriguing travel experience for sophisticates, art enthusiasts, history buffs, and especially foodies. One of the absolute best culinary cities in the world, Lyon has been a magnet for Michelin stars and is home to a collection of revered restaurants worthy of the flight or train ride to the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of France.

In terms of the nightlife crowds, Lyon has cultivated a welcoming atmosphere as the crowds tend to be more local than in Paris, so you can expect chic but friendly clientele and an unhurried experience. The waterfront along the Rhône and Saône rivers is perfect for nighttime strolls under the stars as the historic buildings are lit up each evening. The weather can vary quite a bit, but spring through fall is incredibly comfortable and winter provides its own beauty (and access to the ski slopes of the nearby Alps).

Whether you're taking in a contemporary art show, visiting City Hall, or admiring the Palais de Justice at night, Lyon is better experienced without all your extra items. Store everything you don't need at a Bounce luggage storage location in the city before heading out on the town. You'll be glad you did!

What to do in Lyon at night if you’re looking for…

An energetic night out

Lyon’s bustling nightlife scene may not be as famous as Paris, but you’ll find a lively atmosphere thanks to the scores of students and yuppies residing in this decidedly cosmopolitan city. There are plenty of clubs, but cocktail bars seem to be all the rage in Lyon. There’s no reason you can’t do both in the same evening!

Go clubbing in an old sugar warehouse

Le Sucre is not only the most popular nightclub in Lyon, it’s also the most interesting. Situated near the confluence of the Rivers Saône and Rhône, this events space is where premier DJ sets and live shows draw in locals and hip visitors. It's not massive (capacity is 800 people), but its unique space cultivates an intriguing ambiance and draws on more thoughtful aesthetics than your average nightclub. There's a bag policy, so you'll want to stop by a Bounce location on your way over.

Pro tip: Keep an eye out for touring bands and DJs on their calendar, but it's easy enough to reach for a casual pop-in.

There’s a casino

Lyon is actually home to the largest casino in France. But in typical French fashion, Le Lyon Vert provides a sleek ambiance that couldn't be more different from what you'd expect from its Las Vegas counterparts. Situated in a high-end resort just outside the city center, there are dozens or so tables for poker, blackjack, and roulette.

Pro tip: If you're wary of blowing your entire travel budget at blackjack, you can always pop in for a cocktail.

Hit a snazzy cocktail bar

Lyon is primarily known for its phenomenal restaurants, but the proprietors of the city’s drinking establishments are equally artful in their craft. Expect elevated drinking experiences in stylish cocktail lounges and wine bars that leverage intentional ambiance with expertly curated drink programs. The Left Bank’s Rive Gauche provides ample appeal with mood lighting and a not-too-clubby dancefloor. The luxurious Grand Hôtel-Dieu’s L’Officine offers retro mid-century modern decor with a lively atmosphere and well-made classic cocktails.

Pro tip: To take your evening up a notch, end your night at Le Rooftop (aptly named). It provides stellar panoramic views from its terrace atop the stylish boutique hotel Maison Nô.

A culture-focused night out

If you’re going to visit Lyon, there’s simply no escaping a trip to the historic district, Vieux Lyon (Old Lyon). You’ll undoubtedly be exploring this area during the day, but it’s worth revisiting after the sun sets as many of the top landmarks are lit up every evening.

Enjoy a show at the Lyon Opera House

Home to the National Opera of Lyon, this historic 18th-century venue stands opposite the Hotel de Ville, creating the elegant epicenter of Lyonnaise opulence. You'll be able to take in an opera performance or simply stroll to admire the facade as the sun sets and vibrant red hues illuminate the scenery.

Meet at Place des Terreaux

One of France’s most famous market squares, Place des Terreaux is home to treasures like the Bartholdi Fountain (made by the same artist as New York's Statue of Liberty) and the Fête des Lumières light show. It makes the perfect evening meeting place as the sunset will color the historic buildings surrounding the square.

Pro tip: Let the cobbled streets radiating out from the square lead you to cozy cafés and elegant wine bars to cap off the evening.

Check out the Notre Dame de Fourvière Basilica

This is Lyon’s most historic and beloved landmark, which also enjoys the best views. This basilica boasts masterful Romanesque and Gothic Revival architecture and is perched atop a hill overlooking central Lyon. You’ll enjoy a delightful panorama of the city as the sun sets and the lights create a mystifying halo effect. Make sure to stop by a Bounce location so you're not dragging your bags up the hill to the basilica.

Pro tip: If you’re lucky, you’ll catch it during the Festival of Lights in December when the views get really good.

A foodie night out

Whether you’re popping into a cozy cafe or hitting up one of the trendy spots in the Confluence District, you’re bound to have at least one magnificent dining experience. There are a few Michelin-starred restaurants in Lyon and more than a few earning praise from the institution. Luggage doesn't blend well with fine dining settings, so it's best to leave the bags with Bounce before heading out to dinner.

Les Terrasses de Lyon

This innovative but classic bistro (regularly awarded Michelin Stars) is set in an idyllic perch overlooking Old Town, but that's hardly the best part. The food looks like, well “Michelin food,” so expect meticulously assembled and artfully presented dishes you’ll be tempted to post on Instagram.

La Mère Brazier

This restaurant dates back to the 20s, but there are plenty of modern flourishes to the menu that is driven by chef Mathieu Viannay and Co. Three Michelin stars have been awarded to the restaurant on more than one occasion, and it remains one of the world's true dining destinations. Tables are hard to come by, so try to book a reservation as soon as possible.

Le Musée

The historic grounds of the Hôtel de Ville have been repurposed into a haute cuisine temple that’s become one of the authorities on traditional Lyonnaise cuisine. These dishes are designed to add elegance to the hearty and pragmatic needs of diners situated so close to the Alps. Mainstays include poulet au vinaigre (chicken cooked in vinegar) but the menu changes daily.

Pro tip: It might make sense to do a bit of research beforehand and make at least one reservation for your trip just to have something on the books. Exploration and spontaneity can take you the rest of the way!
